Entertainment Mogul Sentenced to 25 Years

What do New Kids on the Block, ‘N Sync and O’Town have in common besides being annoying boy bands that are now defunct? Lou Perlman. Boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman, who met NKOTB and then became obsessed with boy bands, has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for a variety of financial crimes against investors including fraud, conspiracy, money laundering and making a false claim in a bankruptcy hearing.

The judge told Perlman that for every $1 million he paid back to his victims, he’d shave one month off his 300-month sentence. If Perlman can come up with the full $300 million he stole from innocent victims, then he can avoid prison. Perlman claims he’s broke, however.

In March of this year, 53-year-old Perlman admitted to running a scam for years. He apologized to his victims in court, and his attorney said he had always planned to pay the money back. In 2006, Perlman had fled the country but was later found in a lush resort town in Indonesia registered in a hotel under the name Incognito Johnson. Hard to believe he was found with such a clever assumed name.

If you, like Lou Perlman, have found yourself on the other side of the law, you need experienced legal help. The attorneys at The Umansky Law Firm have experience with financial crimes and will meet with you to discuss your case. Please contact our office today.
