Many Types of Domestic Violence

Domestic abuse is typically classified in one of these groups: emotional, physical, sexual, or economic. Many people who are the abuser in an abusive relationship abuse in more than one of these ways.

Emotional (often called psychological abuse) can be both verbal or nonverbal. The goal of the abuser is to chip away at your self-confidence and sense of self (independence). The abuser usually wants you to be dependent on her him completely. Emotional abuse will involve name-calling, insulting remarks, blaming and shaming. You may be isolated from family and friends if you are being emotionally abused. Your abuser typically wants to keep you all to himself (herself) to fully control you. The scars of emotional abuse are just as real as the scars from physical abuse, and they run deeply. Emotional abuse usually worsens over time and often escalates to physical abuse.

Physical abuse can involve punching, slapping, kicking, choking, or throwing things at a victim. Some physical abuse is so bad that the victim eventually dies from being abused. Many abuse victims are often killed by their abuser.

Sexual abuse is common in already-abusive relationships. According to statistics, between a third and one-half of all battered women are raped by their partners at least once in the course of the relationship.

Economic abuse involves controlling you by controlling your finances. Your abuser may withhold money or credit cards; give you a small allowance only; make you account for everything you spend; steal money from you; prevent you from working; etc.

If you have found yourself losing control and abusing your partner or family member and have been arrested for it, please contact the Umansky Law Firm in Orlando today to schedule your private consultation.
