A 70-year-old minister was arrested after police found him at his church with 16 rocks of crack cocaine and a pipe to smoke them, authorities said.

Acting on a tip that a minister at Living Word Fellowship was using cocaine, an officer approached the minister in the church parking lot Sunday morning and struck up a conversation about drug dealing in the area, police spokeswoman Lisa Parashis said.

During the course of the conversation, the minister made a point of saying he didn't use drugs and consented to a search. The officer pulled a plastic bag containing the crack out of the minister's front shirt pocket, Parashis said. A crack pipe was found in his pants pocket.

HHe advised that it wasn't his but he did purchase it, and he was not willing to give up a supplier's name," Parashis said.

The minister was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is being held on $17,500 bail, according to jail records, which said he did not yet have an attorney.

Guitar Hero Pleads “No Contest” to Driving Drunk

Bon Jovi guitarist, Richie Sambora, has struck a deal with prosecutors following his arrest for DUI last month in California. Just hours after prosecutors filed drunken driving charges against him, Sambora pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit. The DA decided to drop a second charge (driving under the influence of alcohol).

Sambora was sentenced to three years of informal probation, three months of first-offender alcohol awareness class and court fees. He also cannot have any measurable amount of drugs or alcohol in his system while driving during his probation. Sambora, at the time of his arrest, had two children and one woman in the car with him. Had he been pulled over in Florida, and called The Umansky Firm, his punishment could have been even lighter.

If you have been charged with an alcohol-related driving offense in Florida, you need the Umansky L aw Firm to fight to get you the minimal punishment possible. Please contact us today for a confidential consultation.

Client avoids five year suspension of his driver’s license

Recently, the Umansky Law Firm represented a young college student who was caught driving with a suspended license and had two previous convictions for the same offense. If he had pled guilty to the same offense, he would have lost his driver's license for five years. The Umansky team was able to convince the prosecutor to amend the case to a lessor offense of no valid license with a fine and court costs. The young man avoided probation, jail, and five-year loss of his license.

Client avoids a suspended jail sentence

Our client had previously pled out to a driving while license suspended and agreed to a thirty jail sentence, which was suspended upon the condition that the defendant obtain a valid license. Years passed, and our client never did anything to address his responsibilities. Attorney Gary Schwartz was able to explain to the judge that the client was stuck in a catch 22: he could not get a valid license because DMV was showing that he first needed to serve the suspended jail sentence. The judge agreed with my argument and struck the thirty day jail sentence, leaving our client without any sanction.

Umansky Lawyer Wins Another DUI Case!

The Umansky Law Firm attorney, Gary Schwartz, has won yet another DUI case by vigorously cross-examining the arresting officer and breathalyzer machine operator so well that the prosecutor in the case offered to reduce the DUI charge to reckless driving right after Schwartz's skillful questioning of the expert witnesses. Our client had blown a .178 (two times over the legal limit), and he was facing jail time because it was not his first DUI charge. We had made a request to the prosecutor before trial to reduce the charge but to no avail. Then, after Schwartz's brilliant questioning, they agreed in mid-trial!

Florida Teens Charged with Brutal Attack

In Lakeland, Florida, eight teenagers have been arrested on charges of beating another teen in what has been called an "animalistic attack" videotaped for play on YouTube. Seven of the eight teens remained in juvenile detention April 8, 2008; one boy, charged as an adult, was released on bail.

The attack against the plaintiff occurred on March 30, 2008 when she arrived at a friend’s home. The 16-year-old victim was struck on the head and slammed into a wall, knocking her unconscious. Police say she was actually lured to the home for the sole purpose of filming the attack for YouTube.

The charges against the teens include battery and false imprisonment. Three teens who took the victim to a second location are charged with felony kidnapping. Ms. Lindsay was treated for a concussion, a damaged left eye and left ear, and many bruises.

If you are a Florida teen facing a felony or misdemeanor charge, you need legal help. Please call The Umansky Law Firm today to schedule your initial consultation.

Umansky Lawyers Get DUI Reduced to Reckless Driving

Our client was a salesperson making great money. Unfortunately for her, she got pulled over for driving under the influence while her kids were in the car. She admitted to the police to drinking wine and margaritas at a local restaurant. In many cases where a defendant is charged with DUI and has kids in the car, the government will seek enhanced DUI penalties and many times will want the defendant to go to jail. Our lawyers were able to get the DUI reduced to a reckless driving by highlighting the defendant’s need for mental health counseling, and that the client had already initiated treatment. Our client not only was able to avoid jail but got her charge reduced to a reckless driving.

Even the Wealthy Get Arrested

The wealthy developer whose assault on police led the former Boca Raton police chief to resign in 2006 landed in jail Tuesday after another brush with officers.

Gregory Talbott, 53, was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. in Boca Raton and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, resisting arrest and refusal to submit to a breath test.

An officer found him disoriented and slumped over in a 2006 Bentley in the 2800 block of Northeast Second Avenue, police said. When police tried to get him out of the car, he grabbed officers' arms and erupted in an expletive-charged tantrum, police said. An officer stunned Talbott three times in the back with a Taser gun until he stopped fighting, police said.

Talbott suffered a cut over his left eye in the arrest, police said. A doctor stitched up the wound at Boca Raton Community Hospital and officers later took him to the police station and then to jail.
