M.R.'s Story: A Suspended Driver's License

M.R. lost his job after an economic downturn caused his corporation to downsize. He now faced foreclosure on his home and increasing medical bills, and was unable to pay off his outstanding speeding tickets.

M.R. Suspended License Arrested
After a stressful day at work, he was driving home when an Orlando Police Department officer ran his tag. It came back suspended. The officer ordered M.R. out of the car and told him to place his hands on its trunk. Frightened and upset, M.R. did what he was told and the officer questioned him about his driver’s license (DL) suspension.

M.R. asked for a break as he was just trying to get home and off the roads. But the officer did not listen and told M.R. to turn around and keep his hands in front of him. He told M.R. that he was arresting him for Driving While License Suspended and Revoked.

He handcuffed M.R., placed him in the patrol car, and drove him to the Orange County Jail in Orlando, Florida. M.R. was there with hardened criminals for the next 24 hours until he was bonded out.

Obtaining Legal Help
He contacted the driving with suspended license lawyers at the Umansky Law Firm and they discussed his rights and possible legal defenses with him. They filed pleadings on his behalf and began fighting the DL suspension and trying to get the charges dropped or reduced.

Shortly afterwards, M.R. got a new job. The lawyers filed pleadings waiving his appearance at the Driving While License Suspended arraignment, to relieve him from having to take work time off. They pled Not Guilty on M.R.’s behalf and asked for a trial by a jury of his peers.

Before trial, the lawyers filed motions which challenged the police officer’s decision to stop M.R. They eventually arrived at a satisfactory resolution with the prosecutor. M.R. avoided jail, probation, and a longer DL Suspension.

Freedom Restored
Later, M.R. was able to reinstate his driver’s license and now he drives without fear of the police pulling him over and arresting him. He is enjoying his new job and recently bought a new home for himself and his family.
